Stuffed / full mouth in dreams – what does that mean (dream interpretation stuffed mouth)
Dream interpretation of a stuffed/full mouth. A lot of people dream about having a mouth full of food, chewing gum or something else that makes it absolutely impossible to talk, and maybe they even experience the feeling of suffocating. The following is a walkthrough of what dreaming about a stuffed or full mouth can mean.
The mouth is a very important organ. It is the place where we consume food (and dispose of food if it is not good for us – i.e. vomit). Dreaming about food is often an image of psychological /mental energy (see this blog post about food in dreams), and the mouth can therefore be a symbol of how we consume and “digest” external experiences, for example an emotional one.
To keep pulling something out of the mouth (gum, food or something else) as an image of something that is somewhat uncomfortable which we should dispose/get rid of, or that we currently try to get rid of. You might dream that your mouth is full of a gum-like substance, and that you are constantly trying to pull all the gum out of your mouth, but there keep being something left, and it is like there is no point in trying to pull it out.
This could symbolize that you have “swallowed”/experienced something unpleasant in your life that you are unconsciously trying to dispose of in your dream. However, because you are not actively doing something about it in your actual life, your subconscious will be filled up by “gum” – that is, the experience or the thoughts that you are ignoring. You might even find that the thoughts or experiences you have “swallowed” have turned into something that is suffocating you because you are not getting rid of it (i.e. talking to someone about it).
The elements that suffocate you could also be potential lies you have been “fed” as a child, and these can be difficult to get rid of. Maybe the dream thus invites you to look at the “truths” you have in life (your beliefs, and where they come from). Again, the dream might say; you need to deal with this –perhaps you need to talk to somebody about it. See also dreams of strangulation/suffocation.

When trying to understand your dreams it is important to know that your dreams are… your dreams. As such, you are the best person to figure out the true meaning of your dreams.
However, it is important to learn how to generally approach your dreams. Dream dictionaries like this one are only a supplement, and if you want to fully utilize the potential of your dreams, you should start at a different place.
My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” gives you a great foundation for understanding (and recalling) your dreams.

Full or blocked mouth as a symbol of not being heard. You can also dream that your mouth is in some way blocked, and that you therefore are prevented from speaking (for example with duct tape, or something else that prevents you from being able to talk). It may simply be a symbol of a general feeling of not being heard or seen, or maybe you have a hard time saying no in certain situations? What kind of a mental duct tape have you put on your mouth? Is it you or someone else who has put it there? You are the only one who can remove it.
A final alternative interpretation is that your subconscious is trying to tell you that you’ve said enough, and that you need to be quiet.
Dream dictionaries are a very helpful tool when interpreting dreams. However, generally learning how to approach your dreams, will give you a better foundation for understanding them. My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” teaches you how to much better utilize – recall and understand – your dreams.

NOTE: Dream interpretation / analysis is not always an easy sport, and the best way to know whether you have come up with a meaningful interpretation is that you really feel – deep in your stomach – that this is right for you in your life right now.

I have been having these dreams for years now, and today after maybe three years or so, the dream has returned. My dream is of my mouth constantly filling up with salty watery milky buttermilk and its lumps, like cottage cheese chunks, with white hard substances. The hard substances change shape in dreams, sometimes they are round or long hard plastic like rods, that reach down into my throat, or thick hard white slim plastic slabs that I will have to grab hard and pull out from my throat whilst the salty milky watery chunks flow from my mouth, always in public. Once I get it out my mouth will uncontrollably and automatically fill up with these things. I’d be with people, my children, out at the mall, meeting. They will just fill up my mouth and I would run and look for a sink or somewhere to spit them out, some privacy, and I wouldn’t find it, so I’d have to hid and desperately spit it out into my clothes, until I’m wet and stained from it and I’d have to walk around like that. They take such a long time to come out. I always wake up bothered after this dream. Why did it come back?
I have had many dreams like this. The first time a couple of weeks ago I had a dream that I had some kind of seaweed like substance (like from sushi) that was in strips down my throat and I couldn’t get rid of it it just kept coming up and making it hard to breathe. I’ve had maybe 3 or 4 dreams with this kind of substance and feeling. I had another dream where I had a mashed potato like substance blocked in my mouth. It prevented me from talking properly and I felt claustrophobic and suffocated. I have a hard time with my family; in the past my dad has abused my younger brother and he continues to emotionally abuse all of us kids and my mum ignores it. I also have high expectations that I am going to uni and therefore I need never less than As which has made me develop test anxiety. However I have an amazing boyfriend that is hugely supporting and tells me options, I always know to talk to him but sometimes I feel guilty because he might get sick of it after a while. I don’t know if the reasons are a combination of things
Hi Riah – thank you for your comments and your elaborations as to how you might have these dreams! It seems to me that you are very conscious about a lot of things (especially impact of your dads’ behavior) – and how wonderful that you have a suppportive boyfriend! It seems to me that those dreams really tell you that the experiences you have had is something you need to talk about (like you do with your boyfriend), and potentially something you need to maybe see a therapist about – as it is taking up a lot of space in your inner domains – and thus impacting how you feel on a daily basis. Why should your boyfriend become sick of you telling about how you feel? I think that is natural part of a sound relationship – that you can do just that. But clearly you have an impact from your experiences – test anxiety is one thing. I think those dreams try to tell you that you need to work with this more than you currently do, because right now it truly impacts how you thrive. Best regards – Michael
that’s wild. i just woke up from a dream that my mouth was almost full of black paint, and i kept trying to spit it out because it tasted nasty. but i couldn’t get it all out. then it turned into chewing gum that kept sticking to all of my teeth, and in my dream i said “this gum suuuuuuuucks.”
i’m currently going through some very unpleasant trouble in paradise, which i think explains why i dreamt about those things. thanks for the article.
Hi. I have had a reoccurring dream since I was a child. At some point in the dream I would have to empty my mouth of a clay like substance. Inwill have to use my hands to scoop it out. It will randomly happen at some point in the dream and all of the actual dreams are different and have no pattern but that particular thing would happen somewhere in it. I will then feel very sick like I need to throw up when I wake up from the dream. I am nearly 35 now and I have this in dreams since I was a young child.
this is a really random vague dream but I swear I was stuck inside someone’s mouth? What does this mean??
When you dream they force a 50 cent in down my throat what is that dream means
Hi,
I had a dream I was in bed with my fiance we were sitting up talking and my mouth filled with water.
But what if you dream about bread in your mouth and you a struggling to breathe. You scrape your mouth with your fingers and nothing works. You still feel like you are suffocating on bread. I have this reoccurring dream where I am choking on bread. I know in the dream that there is nothing in my mouth but it keeps feeling like I have a mouthful of bread that is blocking my air. I always wake up gasping and feeling terrible after I have a dream like that. Is it the same as what is described above?
In my life I have dreamt it about four times.
I recently just got into a relationship and in my dream I was telling my boyfriend a story then I felt I needed to cough something up. I ran to the bathroom coughed up a bunch of mucus and these clear pebbles. But the clear pebbles had some type of bug or parasite in them. Help??
In my waking life, I have taken a stand in not enabling my partner who has taken me for granted. After a couple nights of arguing and trying to explain my side I had a dream of continuously pulling a vile substance from my mouth and finding I am unable to speak as it keeps coming back. After reading the brief explanation for the dream I am almost feeling guilty for standing in my own power and ultimately feel a need to make amends even though I know it will come full circle again of needing to stand up for myself. help
Hi Bile,
it is a bit difficult for me to provide true help, as I don’t know the details of your relationship, what exactly happened etc. Positively seen, the dream might also say, that finally you are getting rid of all that “putting up with stuff” – but that there is much more of that inside you. A word of caution from my side would however be to also consider how all that bad stuff might have “gotten in to you” at an earlier stage in your life- and maybe not just in relation to your partner. Best regards – Michael
I dreamt that something was stuck in my throat. When I coughed it up it was a hard, dry piece of mud/dirt. I tried to break by by slamming it in the sink, but it wouldn’t break until I bent it and a small corner broke off. What does that mean?
I dreamt i was in a bus, and i had some old high school mates in there. There was giving out fudge sweets and since the atmosphere was that i “was back” i got a lot of them
My mouth ended up being full
I could neither spit nor swallow
It was stuck all in my mouth.
Then people around me started making evil smiley faces but not overly showing.
I woke up.
I had a really weird dream of a guy I didn’t even know had a really long tounge and tried to shove it down my throat and choke me but I ripped it out my throat…what is that about?
What does it mean when my mouth is full of grits or rice, I spit them up out, and my mouth automatically fills back up again? I continued on this cycle of full mouth, spit out, automatic fill-up throughout the course of the dream.
Hi Stephanie – since I do not know any details about you or your life situation, it is hard for me to have an idea. Maybe something of how you try to get rid of something (bad?) – but not being very successful at it? Maybe the dream urges you to have a different approach to whatever it is that “fills your mouth” – and prevents you from breathing (living)? Best – Michael
Okay So I’m Currently In Between Of me not knowing if I’m pregnant or not And I had the same dream but with potatoes and I got lost in the woods and the police found me and I couldn’t Speak I tried to get everything out my mouth but I couldn’t it was too much and he gave me some drink and all the potatoes were gone and I woke up

I Just had a dream of a greyish sand being continuously regenerated in my mouth as I spit it out more comes out like I’m regurgitating it up , sometimes it’s a gum substance or wads of hair, teeth ,or small pebbles like my teeth have been broken into thousands o piecees….. so weird !!!!
i keep having a dream that i’m pulling a towel or string out of my mouth, or out of a wound on my body, and it never ends..
i’m very haunted by this dream. I guess it’s probably due to similar situations as listed in the article.
i thought it was very interesting that so many other people had experienced and searched for the same dream.
I used to have these dreams a lot. It turned out to be my retainer causing them. It didn’t fit properly. I don’t wear it anymore (don’t need it according to dentist) and I’ve never had this dream again! Anyone else having this dream also wear a retainer?
had a dream in December 19-22 ,2012
