Dreams about traveling – what do they mean? (Dream interpretation travel)
To be traveling in a dream is something a lot of people dream about. And no wonder, because “travel dreams” are often about our own journey of life – our movement forwards (or backwards) in life, that is. The following describes various aspects of what it means to travel in dreams.
To be traveling in a dream as a symbol of movement in life/journey of life. When seeing yourself traveling in a dream, either by car, by train, by ferry, etc., well, then it is usually about your own journey in life – the inner (and outer) development you are going through. Which mode of transport you use can also be of significance – see for example the blog posts about driving a car and riding a bus. The interesting thing, then, is what you experience on these night-time travels; is there something which prevents you from getting there? Are you struggling to make it in time (see the blog post about being late)? And where are you actually going?
A classic theme in travel dreams is that you are carrying a lot or too much (heavy) luggage, making it difficult or maybe even impossible for you to catch the bus, train, ferry, plane or whatever it may be in your dream. The main question for the dreamer could then be; is something we are carrying with us in our life story somehow pinning us down in our current situation, and making it difficult for us to move on before we let it go? (See the post about luggage in dreams)
Dreams about being scared of losing your passport (your identity papers) are also common when you are at a point in your life when you are about to move into the unknown, for example in your career. In real life, the fear of losing your identity (status etc.) can of course prevent you from taking the plunge into the unsafe and unknown. You can also encounter various barriers on your (dream) journey. These often symbolize your own mental barriers, but they can of course also be barriers that someone else puts in front of you (for example your partner or your parents trying to talk you out of doing something). However, always look inwards before you look for outside reasons.

When trying to understand your dreams it is important to know that your dreams are… your dreams. As such, you are the best person to figure out the true meaning of your dreams.
However, it is important to learn how to generally approach your dreams. Dream dictionaries like this one are only a supplement, and if you want to fully utilize the potential of your dreams, you should start at a different place.
My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” gives you a great foundation for understanding (and recalling) your dreams.

As mentioned, the mode of transportation in your dream is often important. If you’re driving a car, it seems that you are well on your way in life – in a car, you decide where you go – but if you are a passenger in a car someone else is driving, it may mean the exact opposite. In this case it might be this other person (in the outside world) or what this person represents within you that have taken control.
The car is often also a symbol of your body (the body that brings you around). If you drive a bus (public transportation), it may mean that you live your life in keeping with what others are doing and what they might expect from you – you are not following your own path. Traveling by ship represents a somewhat larger perspective on your life’s journey than traveling by car and bus – you can dream about shipwrecks, giant storms, etc. And you can also experience taking the ship to sea – this may symbolize a break from the family or the life you have lived until now.
The road you travel – if by land – can curve and bend and suddenly split in two, and you may be unsure about which way to choose. This will then usually equal a similar dilemma you face in your life right now – which way should I go? There are very many aspects of dreaming about being on the road, and only you – the dreamer – would know which of these is right for you in your life right now.
As a last point, I want to highlight the importance of your destination in the dream. Are you heading to unfamiliar countries? In this case, this will often be a picture of you in your waking or conscious life (including home life) where you might be exploring uncharted territories. Or it may be new aspects of yourself, a new leisure activity you wish to start, etc. You might be experimenting with new sides of yourself. If, in your dream, you are sure that you are heading towards your “final destination”, then it may be a warning about your own death – your final destination in life.
Dream dictionaries are a very helpful tool when interpreting dreams. However, generally learning how to approach your dreams, will give you a better foundation for understanding them. My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” teaches you how to much better utilize – recall and understand – your dreams.

NOTE: Dreams are 100% individual, and when you dream about traveling, it’s almost certainly about something else for you than it is for your friend, who has also dreamed about traveling. Dream interpretation / dream analysis is sometimes a difficult art, and a particular interpretation of a dream is only correct if you feel “affected” by it. Therefore, it is not certain that the above mentioned interpretations are relevant to you.
The last few weeks I have been dreaming often about traveling by plane, but on every trip I forget to pack clothes. One time the suit case I brought was full of money (sorted like in a cash register). I would love to know what this might mean.

I dreamt travelling by bus we reached somewhere police stopped the bus and asked the driving license from driver.we all alighted the bus to board another bus and evrybody went his way
Hi Grace –
thank you for your dream. Now since I don’t know you or your specific life situation, it is hard for me to guess what this might be about. Did you read the blog post? The dream might indicate how you maybe follow a beaten path in your life – the trail of others, but also how your inner police (a side of yourself), is checking whether this is really OK, and it actually makes you change the course (?) a bit, not knowing whether the new bus goes in a different direction. Best – Michael

Hi Michael, I’m a single female of 36 yrs from India. Most of my life since 16 yrs I lived away from home. I traveled twice out of country UK and now in Denmark. Before UK I was traveling within India. To me my significant dreams r messages ever since I left the country. I’m afraid of large mass of water but love to watch from far. Any disturbed waters of sea or pond and ship wrecks in whirlpool of oceans r some I would b able to interpret easily nd I have come across them before. But this time it’s very confusing to understand. Last night I dreamt that I want to reach a particular place with some important things with me. I was to take a bus by I keep ending the journey by boat. Even by joke I never get on to a boat as I’m afraid of drowning in water in case of accidents. I saw water get as close as to the brim of boat but I got off. Annoying thing is that I get off at wrong destinations nd when I look for another mode of transportation to reach my destination, I end up in another boat with water surrounded by them. Luckily I had help to get off on the shore but I have been going round in circles nd never reached my destiny. I love traveling but not by ship or boat. It’s the same reason I tried to learn swimming but I always drown. I gave up. I’m a Sun moon and mercury Scorpio woman (east and west reading). I have a Gemini ascendant by western astrology. I have good network but still feel lonely. Right now I’m in Denmark nd going through loneliness, looking for job, trying to meet right ppl and ofcoz even looking for true love. What could this mean… My dream? Any help please…?
Hi Bina, how funny you are actually in Denmark right now 🙂 But what terrifying dreams you have! Unfortunately I am no longer able to help out on interpretation for free, as I get way too many requests. Since you are in Denmark I can help you against payment (currently I don’t have a payment system functioning properly outside DK). Best regards – Michael

I dreamt of travelling to Togo with my elder brother and later I travelled on my own and bought some goods. I am a student. pls wat does dat mean
Hi Splendour,
thank you for your comment/your dream. It is almost impossible for me to know what this might be about as I know nothing about you/your life situation, relation to your brother etc. In order to really understand a dream it is almost always necessary to link it to what is happening in real life. The dream might illustrate how you experiment with new sides of yourself (foreign places), or basically how you slowly become more independent (from your brother and others). Best regards – Michael
Hello I have been having trouble sleeping the last week and my bfs great gram is in the hospital. I finally fell asleep last night but I had a horrifying dream about a haunted house. In the dream my mom, brother, and I were living out of a car and my mom had just found a place to live in. The house was like a double wide trailer and seemed nice from the outside and it was clean inside with white walls. When we looked at the house the seller told us it was haunted and told mom there wasna horrible murder there. It was clean except for a huge line stains on the carpet between thhall and the kitchen. In my dream I glimpsed the stain and wouldn’t look directly at it. We were staying for the first night and sincenwe had lived in a car we just had our back packs.the mattresses had been left in the house. My mom leftnhers on the floor and I got scared because I was having a weird scared feeling and woke her up to tell her. She told me to go wake up my brother through the door way to the living room,I was in the master bed room. When I walked out we had all the lights on and my brother was reading a book. I looked over to his left toward the kitchen and the light went out then I saw just a foot. And herd footsteps. I inhaled and couldn’t breathe or move. The lights flickered andni felt like it was coming after me and that’s when I woke up.where I saw thfoot was the stain on the carpet. Help me interpret this please I have been tryingn and failing miserably to understand.
Hi Libby,
thank you for your dream. It is quite hard for me to know what this dream might be about, since I don’t know you/your life situation. But houses in dreams often represent our identity – how we – and potentially others – see ourselves, even our personality (see also this post about houses/homes. This dream however makes me think how maybe right now in your life you have great unrest somehow, and it again might be about the relationship btw you and your mom/brother, how maybe you – and your mom – are overly concerned about your brother, and don’t need to be? Or how your in your life are overly concerned about others/someone else, and don’t need to be? And there might be several other angles, but I am really guessing here… 🙂 Best regards – Michael
Hi my name is Abd-El-Rahman i am from egypt and i am 13 yrs old..
This is the 2nd day for me to dream about being suddenly in another country without even riding an airplane! Yesterday i went to the U.S and today i went to saudi arabia and when i asked where am i in saudi arabia they told me that i am in Boston! Isn’t boston in the U.S?
I forgot to tell you i also found my pinky finger’s skin falling! What does all that mean in the dream?
ahh -didn’t see this one before now – well. Again – hard to know since I do not know much about you 🙂 It might be about how you slowly start questioning your own identity (your current skin would then symbolize your identity so far, i.e. how you see yourself, well even how you see the world and life!), so something is really happening in your life and inside you right now! Sigmund Freud would also say that fingers might symbolize something fallic (your penis), so maybe again the dream might be about how slowly you are becoming a human having sexual desires! That would be a natural thing given that you are 13 years old. Best regards – Michael
Hi Abd-El-Rahman,
what an interesting travel dream! When suddenly being in new countries (never visited before in real life) in our dreams, it might symbolize how we explore new sides of ourselves. Maybe right now in your life you are trying something for the first time (since you are 13, quite a lot is going on I guess, about trying to understand yourself, potentially also sexual elements). It might also be a dream illustrating how you would really like to travel to the US or Saudi-Arabia. And how to you – Boston and Saudi-Arabia is “the same” – for you it is simply a matter of going abroad. Best regards – Michael
Sir .. I got dream today I got dream is that I went to temple with my family .. I don’t know that really.. these is the fourth dream .. first in my drs appeared which is purple colour.. please help
Hello
My mother dreams often about her dead relatives. Last night she dreamt that she was going with her father who died long ago , to a my aunts place who is also dead. She doesn’t recall if she reached there but she saw her reach a railway station with her father. Please help I am anxious about her dream thanks
Hi Un – I am not so sure why you are anxious about the dream? To me it simply seem that your mum is constantly relating her life to the experiences she has had earlier in her life – maybe she is somehow currently “reviewing” her life. The railway station might be an illustration of varoius ways she can go in her life right now (how to spend the rest of her life etc.). How old is she? Best regards – Michael
Thanks to God for the gift you have on dreams. I always dream traveling but sometimes the way ends in forest or a very big wall hindering me from continuing with my journey or passing through a very crooked way. What is it?
Hi Cyri,
and thank you! Well – it would be hard for me to guess exactly what this means in your case, but it seems as if something (in real outer life), or in your inner life (your thoughts about yourself and your situation, might be keeping you in your current situation. Somehting is preventing you from moving forward in you life (/development) – do you have any idea of what that might be? Best regards Michael
Very insightful. I dreamt of traveling to the USA two days back and today it was UK. I’m clueless
Hi Angelika – thank you. Since I do not know you and your specific life situation, it is hard for me to know what this dream is all about. Traveling abroad (where do you life yourself? It seems as if US as well as UK is abroad to you) might illustrate how we currently examine less examined parts of ourselves. Or unexamined parts of life really. Best regards – Michael
Thank you for that tip on travelling. I had a dream where I went to look for a friend in the country for the first time to know her home. As I reach at the square to get off there she was on another bus going back to where I came from. She jus took my hand and we went on the bus and I head back home with her.
Hi Carreen,
sorry for my late response – I have many visitors and thus enquiries on my website 🙂
It is hard for me to know what your dream is about, as I do not know you or your specific (life) situation. It is crucial for you to find out what that friend symbolizes for you – do you know him or her, or is a complete stranger? In any case – what are your associations to this person, what does he/she represent to you? The dream could somehow be telling you, that what you are (desperately?) trying to find in your life (inner peace, love, happiness?) is not where you think it is, you need to find it in yourself (at home). Best regards Michael
I can’t believe my exact dream is being interpreted 😮
Thank you so much for this but do you have a book? I want to read more about concepts of dream
I always dream about finding jewelry of all kinds, what does that mean.?
Hi Perez,
and thank you for your comment/dream! Since I do not know you or your specific life situation it is hard for me to know what the dream might symbolize. But the jewelry might symbolize how you might have “hidden treasures” inside yourself (e.g. personal sides/skills) that you are – or are not – currently living out in real life. In the so called “outer interpretation” the dream might symbolize how you have a lot of “hidden treasures” around you in real life, that you are truly seing, or are not seing. Again it might be opportunities you are not taking, or it might be people, who are true treasures for you – whether you acknowledge it or not. Best regards – Michael Olsen
Thank you so much for your post… for your article. I’ve been dreaming about travelling For the past 4 nights in The dreams i usually encounter serious obstacles. Last night I dreamt about Getting into a fight with Homeless man.
Thanks a million
Hi Sharon, and thank you for your comment! I hope the post helped you understand what your dream of the homeless man is all about. Since I do not know you or your specific life situation it is hard for me to know what the dream might be about, but you might consider whether you sometimes feel “homeless” in your life – i.e. have a hard time finding out who you are, what your identity is etc. The fight with the homeless man might simply illustrate your fight to avoid that “empty” feeling of not being at peace with yourself and who you are. Best regards – Michael Olsen
Enjoyed reading dreams on traveling I dreamt I was traviling on a train got of at the wrong stop but found my way back on the right train…
Someone helped me acquired an American passport in my dream last night. I was late but the person that helped me was about to enter in process. I want to know the meaning of this dream.
