To dream of being strangled – what does it mean? (Dream interpretation suffocation / strangulation)
Dream interpretation strangulation/suffocation
Suffocation in dreams is not a rare thing to dream about. There are several angles to it; these are reviewed below.
Dreams about suffocation can mean that you are simply too busy. Similar to dreams about drowning, dreams about suffocating can symbolize that your current (hectic) life style will quite simply be the death of you.
If you find this interpretation relevant to your situation, it is critical that you take your dream seriously – you simply cannot keep up anymore, and your brain and body needs you to slow down.
Dreams about being strangled as an image of something within yourself that is ”strangling” you/hinders you from thriving and developing. This interpretation is the most common – you can even dream that you are strangling yourself!
…a very clear indication that you in a some way – in what you say, think or do – limit yourself in a way that is “killing you” (that is to say mentally, because you lack vitality).
A 30-year-old woman for instance repeatedly dreamt that a very old woman was going to strangle her. At this point in her life, she was single and often stayed at home and isolated herself, and because of previous experiences, she did everything she could to avoid contact with men, who were actually interested in her.
It was clear from the dream that she, way too early in her life, had habits more suited for an old woman. In the same way, there may be things within you that are quite simply “strangling you” and which therefore prevent you from realizing your true potential; things you may be unaware of.

When trying to understand your dreams it is important to know that your dreams are… your dreams. As such, you are the best person to figure out the true meaning of your dreams.
However, it is important to learn how to generally approach your dreams. Dream dictionaries like this one are only a supplement, and if you want to fully utilize the potential of your dreams, you should start at a different place.
My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” gives you a great foundation for understanding (and recalling) your dreams.
–
In addition to this, it may also be the case that your current life situation, how you see yourself, your social circle, or your job, is “killing you”. There are numerous things – within yourself and in your surroundings – that can “strangle” you and prevent you from unfolding and developing.
Finally, there are also cases which suggest that a dream about being strangled simply can occur because you are having difficulties breathing during your sleep – perhaps you have been uncomfortable, or you may have a physical disability that makes it difficult for you to breathe.
Dream dictionaries are a very helpful tool when interpreting dreams. However, generally learning how to approach your dreams, will give you a better foundation for understanding them. My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” teaches you how to much better utilize – recall and understand – your dreams.

Pls sir, I have repeated dreams of an unknown person trying to strangle me to death, this dream keep coming all the time in my life, infact sometimes it seems too real to be a dream am very worried
Hi Cosmas,
thank you for your terrifying dream! Since you do not know the person you could ask yourself – do you have any limiting beliefs about yourself, so limiting that you basically “cripple” yourself mentally? On the other hand, the dream might mean that this person trying to strangle you is actually a part of you wanting something positive to happen – he/she might want you to drastically change yourself/the way you live your life, in order for you to truly live. When we die in dreams it is often a portrayal of how we need to change – the current version of ourselves needs to “die” – leaving room for new and better ways of being us! Best regards – Michael
have been having the same dream almost everyday sameone trying to choke me
Hi Rosemary,
And thank you for your comment. Apologies for my late reply, but I receive many comments every day, and I simply cannot keep up with them. I had a dream last night that I was in a car with my boyfriend.
The car stopped and a blonde girl ran up to the back window, I wound down the window a bit for her and she reached in and grabbed my purse. I twisted round to say ‘what are you doing!’ And as I did that, my boyfriend put his hand around my neck and began to strangle me.
He apologised as he did it and ‘I’m sorry, I have to do this’.
Just before I woke up I remember feeling like the girl running to the back window was a way of getting me to twist so my boyfriend could get his hands around my neck. I.e. She wasn’t really wanting to steal my purse, she was a ruse.
Any help gratefully received as this has shaken me up – my boyfriend is fab and I don’t feel like he’s suffocating me in anyway at the moment!
Hi Sarah,
and thank you for your comment / dream! Do you know the girl acting as a ruse? If not – she might illustrate a side of yourself complicating your relationship with your boyfriend. Can you in any possible way see how you yourself (in your thinking/action) might force your boyfriend to want you to change (be someone else)? The dream might be saying – you need to try to be yourself in your relationship. And btw. if you feel you cannot be yourself – I think this is something you should bring up with your boyfriend. Last night I had a dream almost same as a guy above. I felt like my mom was strangling me with her hands and it felt so real, I thought I was really dying. I love my mom but we fight a lot and she kind of always overpowers me even when I am right (moms are moms lol), Maybe that’s why I had such dream.. I was really horrified when I woke up, me and my Mom share the same bed but she was not besides me at that time
Hi Taara,
thank you for your comment and dream! I have a hard time telling how old you are, but the dream might be telling you, that it is about time you get a bed on your own (if your situation allows it). Especially since you already see how your mum tends to overpower you. Best regards – Michael
hi had a dream some thing was strangling me i dont know what it was i was trying to scream it wouldnt let me
and was making me count 40 days and threw me on other side of bed as i woke up i was sleping in my normal place
Hi Shakeela,
what an interesting but obviously scary dream! Now since I do not know you or your specific life situation, it is hard for me to know exactly what the dream tries to illustrate. But I find the 40 days very interesting – do you believe in God? I come to think of the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert, waiting for the Devil. Or the 40 days the Israelites spent there as a punishment for not obeying God. Anyway – try yourself to research the bible (or simply Google 40 days in the desert, e.g. Wikipedia might have some suggestions), some of this might make sense to you in your life right now. Best regards – Michael
Hi! Im almira 43 yrs old from philipines looking for an answer what does it means of my dream. I had dream that someone at first he massage back of neck then strangling me, I said to my dreams in jesus name, in jesus name, then I woke up. Then come in thought my brother.
Hi Almira,
And thank you for your comment, Apologies for my late reply, but I receive many comments every day, and I simply cannot keep up with them. I was on holiday in Greece. staying in my own apartment where I have stayed numerous times a year for the past 20 years when one night I had a dream that I was being strangled by someone/something. I heard a male voice which I recognized but can’t place who it was saying very sternly “Let go of her now”. I woke with a start & felt my heart beating fast. I got up to calm down & went to have a cigarette on the balcony & could really feel pressure on my neck as though I had actually been strangled. The pressure went after a few minutes. It took me a while to get back to sleep that night & I can still hear the voice of the male in my head, even though this dream happened over a month ago.
Hi Sarah,
what a terryfying dream that is! And very real too. Now from what I understand – no real person has been in the apartment doing this I guess. And given that assumption – and given that I do not know you or your specific (life) situation – it is hard for me to know exactly what this dream is about. Just to understand it correctly – was the male voice telling the person strangling you to let go? That’s how I understand it. If this is the case, in an “inner interpretation” (seeing the person strangling you and the male voice illustration something you have in yourself), you should consider what the person strangling you represents. It is you having some – e.g. – very desctructive thoughts about yourself (thoughts that are slowly “killing you” – at least mentally), and the male voice represents another part of you knowing how to stop those destructive thoughts.. well again – hard for me to know 🙂 Best regards – Mcihael
Hi
My husband passed away on the 5th of August this year of Malaria. He was a very good husband to me. Two nights ago I dreamt that he wants to strangle me.
I was so scared and cried.
Hi Ruth,
this must have been a highly frightening dream! Since I do not know your specific life situation and the relationship you had with your husband, it is hard for me to know exactly what this dream might mean. One interpretation could be the following: you are right now way to preoccupied with grief and sorrow over the death of your husband, and all these thoughts are slowly “killing you”. The dream then says, do what you can to accept what happened, understand that he is now truly gone, and put frankly; move on with your life (knowing it is not that easy). Another interpretation might be about how your husband – when he was awake, was somehow preventing you from being you. And how his “ghost” is then still inside you right now – preventing you from living your own life. Does any of this make sense? Best regards – Michael
My names Alyshia, lately I’ve had a lot of weird dreams but I’ve felt mentally I’m going threw a lot.
The other night I had a dream about spiders on a island and I tried getting off but I can’t bring myself to ever walk threw a web . Then I woke up.
Just not to long ago was taking a nap and had the craziest dream I was wearing a bikini and somehow the straps were wrapped around my neck and as I’m trying to speak ( which I barely can) saying as in saying cut it off me I can’t breath I fall to the ground and seen a friend run with scissors. Then I woke up. I’ve been having some crazy unusual dreams.
Hi Alyshia,
sorry for my late response, but I have many visitors on my website, and thus get many enquiries. Now, since I do not know you or your specific life situation, it is hard for me to know what this dream really is about. Did you read the blog post on dreams of spiders? This might give you a hint about that dream. Often spider dreams are about the role of (your?) the mother – either your real mother, or what is called the archetypical mother – i.e. the elements inside you resembling that of mother-related traits. The other dream (bikini and being strangled) – again, I do not know you or your situation. Has someone in real life tried to limit you in your personal development, or limit you in being you? I am not sure I understand it correctly in terms of the friend running with scissors – has he/she saved your life in that situation? Again – you can approach the dream from an internal perspective; then you need to see what that friend resembles inside yourself, or from an outer perspective – what is your relation with that person in real life, and can he/she somehow have helped you in your current (i.e. when you had the dream) situation? Best regards – Michael
Hi Michael
I had a strangling dream last night that i couldnt wake up from but eventually forced myself awake. I dreamt i was on holiday with my family and a few of my friends. My ex was playing outside with the children so I wanted to join. As i reached the outside he was already in another quarter of the vacation grounds. So i followed him hoping to catch up, but as soon as i went around the corner two men jumped in front of me and pinned me to a small fence. One had his hand around my neck and bent me backwards over the fence. The other one came around to hold me down so i couldnt move. Just before i passed out one of my friends saw what happened and fought them of. I passed out and when i woke my friend was carrying me to a room where all my friends where gathered. I saw my ex there and ran to him immediately with the little strength i had left and passed out again in his arms. I woke up in the dream freaking out from the horrible dream i just experienced in my dream. My mother called someone over who tried calming me down. I remember hearing my mom say something about, its been years since the rape so why is she only getting nightmares about it now. Thats when i forced myself to actually wake up from this rigid dream.
Hi Christine,
sorry for my late response – I have many visitors, and thus get many enquiries. When reading your dream I was – in my thinking – moving along one particular line of thought. A track of how maybe in real life (constantly?) thinking about your ex limiting you in your personal development, and more specifically maybe, hindering you in finding love again. It was in the process of chasing your ex that suddenly two men were trying to strangle you. I.e. – the thinking would be that these two men trying to strangle you symbolizes how you a slowly “dying” (at least mentally) by following/thinking of your ex. But then I got to the last sentence with your mothers comment on “the rape” – and I of course need to understand whether you have actually been raped, or whether this is still in the dream? If not, then the rape in the dream might symbolize how the relationship you had with your ex was somehow destructive? Does any of this make sense? Best regards – Michael Olsen
What does it mean when you dream of being choked in your dream. But someone helps to you to breath again. Waking up in an unknown place only to see the protector sleep. While going in the next room you see your daughter and mate under the covers but once they see its you the dream ends. Need answers please
Hi Kadjia,
and thank you for your dream! Since I do not know you or your specific life situation, it is hard for me to know what this dream might symbolize. You might consider what – inside your self (thoughts, feelings) might me “strangling you” (e.g. hindering your own personal development), and you should be thankful for that protector. It seems again that this protector is a side of yourself that prevents you from being “strangled”. You might also take a look at how you really feel about your daughter and the relationship she has with her boyfriend/mate – the dream might be a comment to this. Best regards – Michael Olsen
I had a dream last night to what it felt like someone straggling me , as I what I believed opened my eyes it looked like a faint image sitting on top of me , quick flashes it seemed to look like my 10 year old son , I can hear myself telling him to get of me because he was hurting me , at that point I got up out of my bed , my wrist was throbbing and my neck was hurting (like I had a sore throat feeling) … Really upset me and I find very disturbing
Hi Char – thank your for what must have been a highly upsetting dream! Since I don’t know you, your specific life situation, or what characterizes the relationship you have with your son, it is hard for me to know what this dream is about. You might consider how you are maybe too preoccupied with your son, and how that preoccupation is then hindering your own personal development. In your eager to be a “perfect mum” you might be forgetting yourself. And in my view that is not being a “perfect mother” (which btw doesn’t exist). But it could also be other things – maybe your son is overwhelming you at the moment / being hard to handle? Best regards – Michael Olsen
Last night I slept with the outside door to my room open .and I dream that I was in bed next to my 10 year old son and i was being strangle by an unknown person with a lot of force I was trying to get him off but I couldn’t so I play dead and he got off and left . What does this mean?
Hi Carlo, thank you for your very interesting dream! Now since I do not know you and your specific life situation it is almost impossible for me to know what this might be about. What you need to consider is what this unknown person symbolizes – either something inside your self (i.e. that person resembles a side of you), or something/someone outside you – i.e. in the real world. Almost guaranteed it is not that someone in real life wants to strangle you – rather – as said – something inside your, or in the real world – is trying to “kill” you mentally. One angle could be, that in order to have a closer relationship with your son – you need to develop dramatically (our own death in dreams often symbolizes a needed change – how we need to change the way we look at the world and ourselves). Or maybe something/someone is threatening your close (?) relationship with your son. Again that something might be your own thinking/behaviour, and therefore have nothing to do with anyone else.
Best regards – Michael Olsen
I dreamt my boyfriend ex strangling me so hard
Hi Sindi,
that was a frightening dream indeed! I do not know you or your life situation, so it is hard for me to guess exactly what the dream is about. Maybe what you experienced and “learned” (true or untrue!) in the relationship with your ex is now hindering you in a current relationship. It could be something related to how you think about yourself, or how you think about men in general. Which then might me untrue!! Have a great weekend – Michael
Last night i dreamed that i was strangeled by my mom (who i love very dearly but am currently a bit mad at) and i have read interpretations that say you should normally beat down the “bad guy” in the dream and that the dream will have a happy ending, but mine did not. I just woke up, i guess, in the place where i would normally have choked to death. What does this all mean? Why my mom?
Hi Patti,
and thank you for your dream! Well – it is hard for me to know exactly what is going on in your life/what the dream then tries to illustrate. But it sounds to me as if the dicussions you are currenlty having with your mum is a result of a (potentially) long-standing tense relationship, and maybe now you are – at least in your unconscious – starting to realize that your mum is maybe not always that fantastic (which is the case for most people – parents are people, and people have faults!). The thing about beating down the bad guy – well, it depends on whether you are conscious while dreaming (lucid dreaming) – if not, there is not much you can do. But beating down the bad guy… well yes, in your case I guess it would mean to really start analyzing the relationship between you and your mum – why would you dream that she is trying to strangle you? Can you in any think of how -maybe just sometimes – she has said or done something that would be hindering you in your full development – maybe hinder you in being who you are? I don’t know how old you are, so it is hard to understand the overall situation you are in – but I hope some of this makes sense to you! Michael
I had a recurring dream as a child (approx from 5-12 yrs old) that continues to haunt me. I am baking donuts with my mother (can’t actually see her…just know she is there). An old bony brown decrepit hand comes out of a hole in the back of the oven to strangle me. It is horrible looking….like a horror movie. I try to run and scream and scream (sometimes woke up screaming) but couldnt get away, and I could actually feel it around my neck. My mother doesn’t help me. I would wake up terrified.
Hi Gaby, and thank you for your very interesting but frightening dream! Since you’ve had it all the way back to being 5 years old, I would think the dream illustrates a real feeling or experience you had back then. What does that hand (the person owning it) represent? Someone/something (surroundings? Someone?) putting a lot of pressure on you. Maybe back then of making just at good cakes as your mum /longing for your mothers love, or just in general trying to be a good girl. Constantly fighting hard to be a good girl is going to “kill” you. Your mum doesn’t help you in the dream – maybe because she was the one putting the pressure on you, and in real life hasn’t been able to help you with the (maybe) enormeous pressure you put on yourself? It is hard for me to guess, since I don’t know you and your life situation in detail. But if I am just a little bit right in the above interpretation, now is the time to start living YOUR life, and stop trying to live up to the expectations of other. On a last note – the hand might also symbolize generally unpleasant feelings, or the atmosphere present in your childhood home. If you have the dream in your adult life, maybe what you see/experience currently in your life resemble that atmosphere. An atmosphere that threathens to kill you. Best Regards Michael Rohde Olsen
Hi Michael, Thank you for your response! It really helps clarify things for me! I am actually 55 now and still deal with childhood issues. My mother was not a nurturing type and spent most days yelling and sometimes hitting, although through it all I still think she loved me, but it took a long time to understand that. Only recently I found out she did not raise me during my first year or two and a counselor diagnosed me with childhood PTSD. I have dealt with depression as far back as my first memories. When I was 17 I also found out my father was not biological, so I had been lied to all my life. I should mention we moved from Germany to USA when I was 2, and my mother left her entire family behind. At any rate I have often wondered if I have a horrible repressed memory hiding inside me, but think I dont really want to find out. Other recurring nightmares were monkeys coming up out of the registers to strangle me and a huge giraffe that lived in my house and it’s neck was so long it could grab me anywhere I was, even outside! Enough said, but I think you can see how right on you were! Thank you!
Hi Gaby,
thank you for replying – and you’re welcome! It always makes the whole thing worthwhile when I hear whether my interpretation was way off or not 🙂 And it surely sounds to me as if you have things to deal with, but it also sounds to me as if you are dealing with them, at least by showing an interest in / reacting on your dreams. Our dreams help us to become much more aware of what is truly going on inside us (and btw. I do understand why you don’t want to really confront/face the childhood memories). You still have many years left to live in, so if this continues to haunt to (in your dreams and in waking life), it could maybe make sense to start taking a closer look at it. Just FYI – this website will be heavily upgraded on Monday/Tuesday, where I will start intensifying my efforts and offerings in English (this is my Danish website http://www.michaelrohde.dk, where you can see the new design) . Best regards – Michael
This is the first time I’ve experienced anything like this. In my dream I was sitting in a car at night listening to some music I don’t know if I was waiting on someone or not but I was listening to some music I seen the car next to me and people was getting in it I decided to roll my window up and when I did moments later something reach around and grab for my neck and that’s when I immediately woke up because I felt it grabbing my neck I looked around to see if anybody was around but no one was there it hade me really shook up.
Hi Gregory,
thank you for your comment and your very interesting dream! Now – I don’t know you or your specific life situation, but based on the content of the dream it could maybe be an illustration of how right now in your life you are closing down opportunities, keeping people or oppurtunities away from you (you rolled up the windows instead of showing an interest/trying to connect with those other people). As you do that, you slowly “die” (your potential death in the dream is then seen as a mental (developmental) death, rather than a physical death. You should see the figure trying to strangle you as an illustration of something you have within yourself (destructive thoughts, behaviour). Hopefully some of this makes sense to you! Michael
I had a dream/nightmare that my son who is 24 came into my room, and stood at the door and we were talking about angels, then he said there are bad angels as well. And I said I know . Then a few minutes later he was holding my head down, suffocating me, I couldn’t move, and I was screaming for help but my voice was horse, and I wasn’t screaming loud enough for my other two son’s to save me . Then I woke up, it was scary. What is the meaning of this.
Hi Marie,
And thank you for your comment. Apologies for my late reply, but I receive many comments every day, and I simply cannot keep up with them. That is also why I have decided to no longer do interpretations for free. Instead I offer the following options: http://www.michaelrolsen.com/dreamcoaching. Best regards – Michael
I am in my third trimester of pregnancy. I keep having vivid dreams that my husband is trying to strangle me by wrapping his arms around my neck in a choke hold.
Hi Kala,
first of all – congratulations on your pregnancy!
With regard to your dream – you can see it from two sides; the outer interpretation where you should see your husband in the dream as an illustration of how he right now in reality is trying to “strangle” you. He might have demeaning but indirect comments about what is about to happen (the two of you becoming parents, maybe for the first time?). Or maybe you are just very anxious about how he will react to you becoming a mother (again?). OR – you could see your husband in the dream as an illustration of something you have inside yourself (your mind, your thinking), the so called inner interpretation. I.e. something that you, and only you (not your husband) might be thinking or doing that potentially relates to the coming new period of your life, something (thoughts, actions?) that is highly destructive. Maybe you yourself are afraid of what’s going to happen when you give birth? Maybe you are afraid to “die” – i.e. loose the freedom you now have. When we ourselves die in dreams it is often an illustration of how the way we until now have perceived ourselves is no longer valid, or how others is trying to change the way we are. Best regards Michael
I have been having recurrent dreams of being strangled from behind in the dark by an unknown person or presence who seems male, and I wake up terrified.
In one of these dreams, I went to bed in a dark room. The bed was against a wall. As I lay down to sleep with my back to the wall, I realised to my horror that between me and the wall was a person or presence who suddenly wrapped themselves around me with one hand round my throat. I could not see them but they were so strong that I was powerless and I felt weak and drugged. I called out to my partner “MICHAEL HELP ME!” but my voice was a whisper and he couldn’t hear me. There was a tremendous sense of evil and I felt as if I had no ability to fight and was just sinking into my own death. Then I woke up terrified.
Another dream was that I was walking down a dark staircase in twilight. I saw an open door off the staircase into a busy supermarket. I saw a girl in there who hates me and she gave me a very strange hostile look. Then I felt these large warm male hands close around my neck from behind, very strong hands. I could not see the person because it was so dark. Again I felt drugged and weak and sank to the ground. The person behind me also sank down but keeping his hands around my neck, and his grip was getting tighter. I whispered “I can’t breathe” but his grip carried on getting tighter. Then I woke up, again terrified.
Hi Ali,
Thank you for your very interesting and obviously terrifying dream! A central thing to me is whether or not you know the person/”thing” that is trying to strangle you? If not – and that seems to be the case – you should most likely see the dream as somehow saying that you have some within yourself (i.a. a “side” of you, your thoughts, a shadow-figure) of which you are not aware, and that side of yourself is currently trying to “kill” you. Is it maybe some very negative thoughts about yourself? Some destructive thoughts about you and what you do? From what you describe about a girl not liking you – do you often feel like that; that people don’t like you? Maybe these a just thoughts in your own mind – and not what people around you actually think. The dream again could thus be saying that you have a very destructive element “inside” yourself. Best regards Michael
I recently had a dream which ive been unable to forget, it starts with me in bed awakeing to tugging on my leg all the blankets have been pulled off me and im in my bedroom from when I was 12 years old everything is the exact same im even around that age again. Im just lying there twitching profusely, the whole room is covered in large moving shadows I keep trying to shut my eyes so they disappear but nothing happens I start to feel really scared and get up to go to my mothers bedroom I walk to the door way and just stand there I can almost see the figure of something moving I just sit there watching and all of a sudden something has it’s hands tightly around my throat and is pushing me backwards so fast im trying to scream the whole time but can’t, then I wake up. Its crazy because it felt so real I could feel the hands around my throat they were burning hot and could still feel it when I woke up. I never remember my dreams this one was so vivid and has really been on my mind lately. I just want to know if everythings okay I almost don’t feel like myself after that ive had a depressing mood and it feels like theres a grey cloud that follows me every where that I go now.
Hi B,
thank you for your comment and your dream.
First of all – since identical parts of our brain are active while dreaming and being awake (in terms of “seeing” and sensing) – then dreams are “real” – the feelings that they evoke in us, the physical sensations – they are real. So I am not surprised that your dream seems so real to you!
In terms of what the dream might mean – it is no doubt a central thing, that you are 12 years old in the dream. I would encourage to look into your memories of what happened when you were around 12 years old. It seems that something has frightened you, or at least cause you to feel anxiety. This anxiety is now coming back, potentially provoked by something that is happening in your current/waking life. Since I do not know you and the specifics of your situation, I cannot come much closer to what your dream might mean. Best regards
Michael
I dreamt I was being strangled by my best friend’s friend. I even woke up clutching at my throat and saying “No Sally no!” It was very vivid and frightening.
Sally has always been jealous of iur friendship.
Hi Sonia,
thanks for sharing your dream! Well it seems to me, that you’ve got a really good idea of what the dream is an illustration of. Potentially it could also be an illustration of how your own (potentially many) thoughts of how it must be difficult for Sally, is also making it even more difficult for you to enjoy the friendship. You could also “turn the dream upside down” and ask whether you are jealous of the friendship between Sally and your best friend? The dream then showing how that jealousy is causing you worries/problems. Only you would know which – if any of those interpretations – is correct. Best regards – Michael.
I dreamt about being strangled by am unknown person and then being asked about my father . what does this mean ?
Hi Diamond,
of course it is quite hard for me to have a qualified guess, since I don’t know you and your specific situation. It could be that in your thoughts/thinking, you are somehow putting a great pressure on yourself – maybe a pressure involving your father in some way. Maybe you feel (or somehting in you feel) that you ought to really evaluate your relationship with your father, take it up somehow. It is of course crucial how you see your current relationship with your father, I am sure that the dream is a comment on this. Do you like your father /don’t like him? Are you talking to him now and then (I can’t tell whether you still live at home). My guess would be that you put yourself under some kind of unconscious pressure related to / involving your father somehow. Best regards – Michael
Hi I’m Jolene and I’m 13 years old. Last night I had a long complicated dream (I’ll save you time) but basically I went to the bathroom to do my makeup and I kept hearing creaking from the shower. The curtain was over the shower of course. So I pushed my hang against the curtain to see if someone was there and all of a sudden a strange man that I couldn’t see strays strangling me. ( I was wear a black ‘i don’t care at all’ sweatshirt) he took the strings of the sweatshirt and wrapped them around my neck when I tried to scream someone’s in the bathroom. I could see myself in the mirror being strangled and as the pain started I saw everything slowly fading away and I woke up. What does this mean?

Last night I had a dream about me being with my grandma she was laying in bed like if she was gone (she past away 2 months ago) and I looked at my uncle (my moms brother) he was there and I was like what happened to my grandma and he was like she just passed away etc… he was faking it that I know he did something I saw something so weird that made me know that he raped her ( sounds bad and gross at the same time I’m saying this) so I got super mad started yelling at him etc… I enclosed my self in the restroom in my dream I couldn’t close the restroom door it was hard for me to close it so he will reach for the door to open it and he will grab me !! I did it several times and that’s when he finally got me he choked me and for some reason I was kinda playing dead so he can go out of the room to escape but he knew I wasn’t dead and I woke up and asked me why did he try choking me and I started yelling at him so I was fighting him he had a knife he did try killing me (then my grandma woke up I thought she was dead and she tried getting up but she couldn’t.) but then some how I got the knife I hold him with the knife on his neck to call the police or my parents but that’s when I woke up so my own uncle tried choking me and I thought he killed my grandma why those two people in my dreams? Why my uncle and my grandma? My grandma passed away two months ago I had something happened with my uncle that I can’t say it’s personal! He tried choking me to not say anything about what happened in the room I think! Idk it was a strange, sad dream, very challenging to fight him.but atleast I got to see my grandma
Michael please help me I keep dreaming that my ex husband is choking me and that my current husband leaves me and will not help me and when I am not dreaming about that I dream about one of my children getting killed or hurt

I regularly dream that I see an old woman (always a different woman that looks nothing like the last) and I am not afraid and then out of nowhere she starts to violently strangle me and tell me I’m going to die. Usually she is staring me in my face choking me but last night I was looking in a mirror and she wasn’t behind me when I turned around but when I looked back into the mirror she was choking me from behind while we were both looking in the mirror.

Messaged this to my boyfriend the moment I woke as an attempt of reassuring me that this wasn’t true, even though it felt incredibly real, being in my house where I had been dreaming, along with only me and my brother being in the house for the next few weeks could have explained some of this : checking it wasn’t: Had the most horrific dream – your house got robbed after you had these caterers in, and before one of them left I got hold of one of them and was like ‘yeah you leave cunt’ as I didn’t trust him when he left yours prior to the robbery, turns out it wasn’t him, and then me and you had a huge argument as you weren’t taking any of it seriously as I was the one who got to yours and found it had be robbed so I was so frighten, that I went to mine, and the same thing happened but way more psycho, they had painted ontop of this painting, that I didn’t notice so I was going round each room scared as hell, with a bat with mum as no one believed me, and then we were like fine no ones here with dad and everyone in the lounge, and then we heard footsteps so dad went up, and then next thing I know I turn around after mum says I swear that bald man wasn’t in the portrait of people that we have, and so I look at it closer thinking its familiar when actually I’m able to scratch it off, and it’s of this huge bald man, sat down, still damp from where someone’s painted on top of the framed glass, so I scream and look behind the sofa with Kieran and there he is, well weird I start smashing the place up with him in before he reaches his full height with Kieran crying, and then mum and dad finally get there and we tear him up like cut all his skin which is like latex so weird, anyway we all think it’s over, and then Johanna and ruby are over for some reason, an I still ain’t at ease, anyone long story short we are being tormented by noises in the house, I think it was me and mum but we brutally caught someone in the bathroom and wripled out their battery from their chest and drowned it and burn them to death, so me Johanna and Ruby go into this other bathroom… Me and Johanna at the back of the room.. And then Ruby shuts the door.. Which really confused me.. And then makes me anxious that it was her all along, and then I see Johanna face me… Confirming that they both planned the trap, and that’s when I force myself awake, where I just about manage to get out of the paralysed awakeness. I woke with both Ruby and Johanna, and I’m really fond of Johanna which is strange what was reflected in the dream. Haven’t had a nightmare for what feels like years, so all I wanted to do was run up to my brothers room, so strange. And I’m frightened that it might just be.. So dark, and there were points where I couldn’t properly scream as whoever would be chocking me, so I couldn’t be left alone as I kept doing it to myself, I would scream ‘he is here’ killing me from behind but it was me.. So weird mate so not okay, was so brutal.

Hi Ebone,
thank you for your comment and very interesting dream! Try and ask yourself; what might – in real life – cause this choking feeling? Unfortunately I don’t have the option of helping out in more depth here, as I get very many requests every day – also via e-mail. Instead I offer the following options; http://www.michaelrolsen.com/dreamcoaching. best regards – Michael
I had a dream about my mother walking in my room and strangling me I woke up because I couldn’t breath strange thing is I woke up exactly at 3 am.. what does this mean???
I dreamt last night that one of my best friends was strangling me. In my dream while this was happening I asked him “why?!”.. he replied “I’m trying to help you!”
I keep having the same dream over and over.
It’s very vivid.
Leaving the name out of the Psychiatrist, it’s a repetitive dream where he his facing me, looking at me in my eyes, both his hands are around my neck choking me, in my dream he is trying to choke me to death. In my dream he kills me. I can’t move, I’m dead but I’m not [It’s hard to explain.], I than see Dr. ___ talking to the police, I hear the police officer say to Dr. ___ How do you want us to report this?
I can’t move, the next thing in my dream, the police are burying me alive, I’m dead in my dream and I can’t move, but at the same time I know I’m still alive.
I’ve been having this dream over and over for seven years now. Why?
I had a dream last night that I was being strangled by my x partner. This is someone who I still feel very much bonded to. It was an unhealthy relationship. The other more prominent thing on my mind is that I am involved in a legal case. This has been causing me stress and as it is getting closer to the day I started dreaming about the case alongside being strangled. I often have multiple different dreams in one evening. It’s hard to know what the dream really meant. And when I read things that say I feel stifled, it does make sense but I almost felt the dream was telling me something more. I am still very attracted to my x and we have not spoken in a long time. I don’t know if I was just remembering him and keeping him close to me or if I was surrendering to something. Or i I was meant to remember him for the future.
Hi Kit,
you did share a bit of what’s happening in your waking life, but still it is hard for me to know exactly what the dream might mean. It might also simply mean that the fact that you are still very bonded to him really hinders you in moving on. The dream might say – you need to untangle yourself from him to live again. I keep dreaming about my abusive ex boyfriend nearly choking me until I wake up gasping for air in a panic. He had never choked me though. He is now incarcerated…. What does it mean?
