Dreams about houses / homes /apartments- what do they mean? (dream interpretation on houses and homes)
Dream Interpretation: house/home/residence in dreams – what do they mean?
Have you dreamt of houses or apartments, then these are often images on your personality / who you are. Especially if it is your own home in the dream – whether it actually looks like the home you live in, in reality, or not. If it is a different home in the dream, it may just be a picture of a new and different version of you – something you can become or are becoming. The different rooms (including 1st floor, attic, basement, etc.) will then be pictures on the sides of your personality. Your house might of course also simply mean your house. The following describes the importance of housing / homes (houses and apartments) in dreams.
A house – typical meaning in dreams.
A house / home has a protective function. When we are there we are mostly secure; we feel at home. In this picture, the house (where we live), is that which “surrounds” us, the home in which we feel at home, and thus the personality (and related behaviors) that characterizes us and in which we “feel at home in.” Some psychologists would call it our “self” – an image of who we are.
Rooms / spaces as images on the sides of our personality.
In addition to the above, the different rooms in the house – known and unknown – represent aspects of ourselves – known and unknown. I for example dreamt that I moved into a new apartment, where I found a door to a basement which I did not know was there. The basement was filled with brushes, colors, and all kinds of paint equipment, which actually belonged to the previous owner. I realized that I had some artistic / painting skills, which I did not use, but which I earlier had made great use of. In this context, the basement is as an image on my unconsciousness, as it lies beneath my consciousness (ground floor). I have subsequently used my drawing skills in the processing of my dreams. I have drawn important symbols in my dreams, and whilst working on this, I caught sight of what the specific dream symbol in a specific dream symbolized. Similarly, different rooms in the house, as mentioned earlier, are pictures on the sides of our personality.

When trying to understand your dreams it is important to know that your dreams are… your dreams. As such, you are the best person to figure out the true meaning of your dreams.
However, it is important to learn how to generally approach your dreams. Dream dictionaries like this one are only a supplement, and if you want to fully utilize the potential of your dreams, you should start at a different place.
My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” gives you a great foundation for understanding (and recalling) your dreams.

If we in the dream are afraid to go into a certain room, this will typically be about our relationship with that part of our personality that space represents. If we for example know that this space is filled with musical instruments and we do not dare to go into it, it can be about a fear of living out our musical sides in reality. A fear can be triggered by an inhibiting mindset of “it’s low status / wrong to play music” (something you might have gotten with you from home).
Upper floors of the house / home can represent more intellectual and spiritual sides of us. The facade is similar to our façade – the way we want to be seen on the other, where the contents of the house can look quite different than the “polished” / clean facade. A central place in the home is the kitchen – this is where we are nurtured – in dreams this is the mental nourishment. Is the kitchen in a dream an uncomfortable place to be, it may be an image that we give ourselves mental/spiritual sustenance in an inappropriate way, through harmful thoughts, etc.
The childhood home in dreams.
If we dream about our childhood home, it’s usually something in us that is shaped by/points back to events in our childhood. In addition to the above, the kitchen/dining room in our childhood home is often a place where we have had very socializing moments with our parents and possibly siblings. There can be many patterns – especially how we communicate as part of a family. The dreams here can show how we have learned appropriate/inappropriate ways of being with our dear ones on. Have you dreamt of a house/home – perhaps your childhood home, then don’t hesitate to write in the comment box below.
Dream dictionaries are a very helpful tool when interpreting dreams. However, generally learning how to approach your dreams, will give you a better foundation for understanding them. My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” teaches you how to much better utilize – recall and understand – your dreams.

NOTE: Dreams are 100% individual, and when you dream about houses and/or homes, it’s almost certainly about something else for you than it is for your friend, who also dreamt about houses and/or homes. Dream interpretation / dream analysis is sometimes a difficult art, and a particular interpretation of a dream is only correct if you feel “affected” by it. Therefore, it is not certain that the above mentioned interpretations are relevant to you.

I always dream of my childhood house. I stayed at that house until im 14 yrs old. I left the house since my mom died and need to move to my aunt. Im just adopted, so my mom’s last wish was to live with my aunt and not with my dad. I just visit him from time to time. then yrs past my dad died and from that time i always dream of our house until now. Im already 31yrs old.
I dreamt that I’m moving to another house together with my 2 brothers and the house has a bigger space than the house where I lived but it shown there that we have different bed but in one room only. The place was nice, the air feels so refreshing and I saw that im helping a child trying to eat some food. What does it mean?
Dear Essar,
I am sorry to inform you that I currently don’t help out here, as I am focusing fully on the completion of my next book. You can try asking this one major question with regards to the dream; how might this dream in any way be relevant for my waking life? I can offer to help you in a private session (with payment), please see more here. Best regards – Michael
I had a dream I found myself in a house that is small and can not accommodate my belongings.
I dreamed a long time ago with a big unfinished 3 story wooden house I had never before seen in my life. I remember the feeling of happiness I felt in my dream. I was sitting on a bench on the highest floor and had a view of lights of houses on mountains and stars in the sky.
Just today, scrolling through a local real estate website, I saw the house that was in my dreams, everything the same, even the view the only difference was this house had only 2 stories. What does this mean?
A crazy intense dream I had last night!!!
So I ran into my sister (in real life, we haven’t spoken to each other in months ~ since my Dad died)
She was all happy to see me. She was doing very well for herself, and bought an old 3 story mansion on a hill near the beach.
I was watching my grandson River, and carried him into the house. My oldest son, Richie was with me too.
My sister was all happily showing me her new (to her) home, and telling me about her plans to renovate it, and decorate, etc., etc.
All of a sudden, she pulled out a gun and jabbed it into my ribs HARD!!!
I was thinking, OMG my own sister is gonna kill me!?
Richie grabbed River and put him in a playpen and retreated into a corner of the room. He remained silent and expressionless 😑
I was backing away while my sister had the gun pressed (she was jabbing me repeatedly actually) into my ribs, and saying “I have had it with you! I am tired of all the pain you have caused me in my life! Who do you think you are!? I am done with you once and for all!”
Then she said, “Now my boyfriend and I have some other business to take care of for a bit. You stay here, and I’ll deal with you when I get back”
She then left with this “boyfriend”.
As it turns out they were drug dealers, and that is how she had this huge mansion now.
After she left, I made sure River was okay in the playpen. And my son, Richie was still there watching him so he was safe.
I had an urgent desire and need to explore the 3 stories of the house.
And I knew that I had to get up to the 3rd story because that was where Ken (my son-in-law) was.
He would save us … he would know what to do!
On the first floor I came across this large room that was decorated in old pink carpet.
It was the prettiest pink ever, (pink means joy and childlike innocence)
and the lighting in the room was bright, yet soft. I could see dust all over the carpet, looked like white powder. Everything in the room was old, yet delightful!
I knew I shouldn’t be in here … if my sister came back and found me snooping around, she would kill me for sure!
But even though I didn’t want to leave, I made myself get out of there because I had to get to the 3rd floor … I had to find Ken!
My loved ones were depending on me!
I left the “pink” room, and climbed up a beautiful flight of stairs with an ornate bannister that was deep burgundy in color. Half way up I paused, and off to the side I could see another room with burgundy carpet.
(Burgundy means intense emotional turmoil, but it also means strength and courage)
I wanted to go into that room SO badly, but I couldn’t reach it. I stared at it one more time, and I could see daylight streaming into the room, but could not see the whole room, nor the window from where the daylight was coming from.
Then I said to myself, “Must get to the 3rd floor … must find Ken!”
Well, I couldn’t find (or reach) the 3rd floor.
But all of a sudden I was given a vision …
It was Ken sitting in a room that was part of the 3rd floor … but it was “undone”.
It was totally made out of wood … wood walls, wooden planks for floors, and covered in sawdust everywhere.
(Wood means wisdom, knowledge and guidance)
Ken was sitting at a makeshift desk, like a carpenter’s desk (just like something my Dad would have made).
He was just sitting there and communicating with me telepathically.
He told me to get back downstairs, grab River and Richie and get into the get away car!!!
“Get into that car, and drive as fast as you can down the coastal hwy and I will meet you at “so and so” beach!
We will all be together and safe and we will figure out our next course of action once we are all together on the beach.”
So I ran like crazy back down the stairs, grabbed River (I had to change his diaper first … he was soaked),
and then I looked outside in the driveway and saw an old convertible car with the top down just sitting there waiting for me.
It was a miracle!
The car was a deep navy color with teal and burgundy trim.
(Navy means an optimistic future, teal means healing, and burgundy ~ strength and courage)
We got in the car (me and my loved ones), and I started tearing down the hwy, the coastal hwy! Wind blowing through my hair, we were driving FAST 💨
I could see the beach/ocean 🌊 off to the side (the waves were rather huge) … and I was driving like a mad woman to get to the “beach” where Ken had told us to meet him.
I knew everything was going to be okay … I was given instructions, and I was following those instructions to a “T”
I felt exhilarated, I was free, and on my way to safety and security once again!
Hello, My mom had this dream that she is removing the carpet from a women’s house ( one of our acquaintance which I have a crush on her son). During the dream, she was also very tired of removing the carpet she was thinking about how others will view her and if she has to act as if she is tired in order to stop. Please tell me what it means thank you!
I have a dream about an townhouse I use to live in. When i came back to live in it there were people that i know living it. But it in the dream i am aware that i have another home to live at it and that i can go back to. And i also was telling the people to leave and that they can not stay here. But i said to myself in the dream that i can always go back to my other home that i have presently. So in the dreami have 2 homes.
I had this dream about looking for a house. Like my crush and I were going house hunting for a home and my best friend came along in the dream. It’s kinda strange to me but I keep having dreams like that involving my crush. It’s like my sub conscience is going through the steps for me. Meeting, spending time, getting closer , now looking for a home but the thing is that the house want built in the dream. Like I pulled up in this drive way and all you saw was open space and construction workers leveling out the ground.
i have a dream I was relaxing in my pool of my newly bought mansion. what does it mean? sometime earlier I had a dream I was being chased by a snake…it didnt catch me though, in the end it transformed into something else…I forgot
Last night I dreamed about painting a new house , while my EX was busy decorating the room. please help me with the meaning.
The other thing is, my Ex always appeal in my dreams.
I had a dream I was in the car passing the most beautiful houses on hills my mom was in the front seat and we were just admiring the houses they were so beautiful it felt like we were in heaven
I dreamt of being inside a wooden house. the place is dark but I could see the floors clearly. The floors are made of wooden planks. I could not tell if I were in the ground floor or on the Second floor.
I had a dream yesterday that my eldest brother spent one year abroad and during this time, he had bought his first house. He bought the house in his home country. I was so surprised and started asking him how he did it because I was trying to buy a house and wasn’t succeeding.
In reality, my eldest brother is not abroad and he doesn’t own a house and neither do I. But I have saved to purchase a house and each time, the process seemed very promising and then the vendors pull out of the process. Shortly after this, I accepted a job opportunity in China but it wasn’t for me. I returned to my home country weeks ago. Now, the job opportunity that I had known about before I knew about the job in China has come to my attention again and now I am scared of going because each time I go abroad things doesn’t work out.
I dreamed I was in a home trimmed with gold many rooms so clean beautiful..
I dreamt that my street houses and my father’s house have been renovated and upgraded without my knowledge
I have had a reoccurring dream for 5 years about being in various houses I know are not mine. Often, I have to go up unscalable driveways or enter through narrow windows, or some odd entry. I know it’s not my house, which often have huge spiders in them.
I am only 11 and I have a recurring dream about having a trailer- like home of my own. When I had this dream of having my own I have, for some reason, have been determined and set on building this one house.
Wow – what a fantastic dream Emily! It seems to me you are a highly creative child with fantastic ideas to implement in real life. The trailer-like home might also portray how you either feel distanced from you parents – or on the contrary – have a need to distance yourself more from your parents. The dream might say that you are slowly learning to take of yourself. Not that you already are ready to live on your own, but more that there are more and more things you are handling on your own – independent of your parents/family. Best – Michael
I had a dream that I was in some rich peoples homes. There was a thick bullet proof glass door, that lead to the outdoors. I also saw thick solid wood bedroom doors. I aske the person about the thick glass doors. I inquired as to why the class is thick, because someone could shoot through it. The person said that it was bullet proof. She said that is why there were solid thick bedroom doors also. I saw a handsome gentleman. I told her that I wanted someone in my life. I began to cry, and then I woke up with pain in my wrist and tingling in my left hand (I have carpal tunnel anyway).
Hi Ms. Young – what a very interesting dream! Hmm – one thought that comes up is the following (challenge being I don’t know much about you and your life situation, thoughts etc.) – are you also in real life wanting someone in your life? Could the bullet proof glass then symbolize how you (yourself) have created barriers to succeed at that goal? Best – Michael
