What does it mean to dream about babies and/or children? (dream interpretation baby, child)
Dreams about babies / children – what do they mean?
They’re often portrayed as cuddly and lovely little creatures, as in the picture – but what does it mean when we dream about babies and children? It can be about several things depending on our life situation, but often it is the potential, undeveloped sides of ourselves, or “priming” projects we are working on, to grow. However, there are several approaches to the dreams of babies and children.
A baby in a dream can be like an image on the new opportunity of a lifetime, a new side of the personality or a new project. Babies are the little creatures that can grow up to be all sorts of things. When we are in our dreams and see babies or children, an important interpretation can be: could this baby or child (in the dream) be an expression of a new project I not long ago let go of? Or is it simply sides of myself that I did not spot and which I should increasingly grow/develop?
I myself had a dream when I at a point in my career said yes to a job in the United States, about a woman who devoured hundreds of dead babies into a grave. It was for me a clear picture of how I closed down for other development opportunities by saying yes to the job.
Similarly, children and babies in your dreams can be pictures of opportunities for you to grow and develop – or not. Some psychoanalysts/therapists talk about the fact that we need to keep track of our inner kindergarten – the immensely many aspects of ourselves that would like to be addressed; we have to do our best to accommodate everyone – in the right quantities and at the right time.

When trying to understand your dreams it is important to know that your dreams are… your dreams. As such, you are the best person to figure out the true meaning of your dreams.
However, it is important to learn how to generally approach your dreams. Dream dictionaries like this one are only a supplement, and if you want to fully utilize the potential of your dreams, you should start at a different place.
My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” gives you a great foundation for understanding (and recalling) your dreams.

Children and babies in dreams as reflections of our own childish sides.
Another angle of the presence of children (or babies) in our dreams are the direct forthright that they can be pictures of our own childish (baby-like) sides.
If you dream of a child who behaves unreasonably and may not accept the “framework and structures” that are being foisted on him/her, even then, a good question would be whether you might sometimes, in an almost childish manner, excuse yourself over the inevitable requirements and frameworks such as your work, or your new life as a mother/father etc. But that is not to say that having childish sides is a negative thing.
Perhaps we unconsciously restrain a positively “childish” approach to life in ourselves – such as it could be an indication of a tremendous openness towards others, towards the ones who can see the fun in almost anything, those who think and act more freely, etc. These are good “childish” qualities. It is important to know how “the child inside you” thrives. So as always in dream interpretation, it is important that you go see the dream from several angles.
The importance of the child’s age.
In addition to the above, there are some very interesting meanings of the child’s age in dreams. The child’s age in the dream can be a picture on the age of a project you have launched/started (for example, a two-year-old child as an image of the store that was opened two years ago, or the relationships you initiated two years ago). Another very important aspect to the child’s age can be that it also reflects the age you were when something important (perhaps traumatic or intense) happened to you in your life.
Dreams of babies and children in pregnant women.
For the record, I should also mention here that it is perfectly natural and supported by research that pregnant women dream immeasurably more about babies and children than non-pregnant women.

NOTE: Dreams are 100% individual, and when you dream about babies or children, it’s almost certainly about something else for you than it is for your friend, who also dreamed of babies or children. Dream interpretation is sometimes a difficult art, and a particular interpretation of a dream is only correct if you feel “affected” by it. Therefore, it is not certain that the above mentioned interpretations are relevant to you.

I had a dream we took care of a haunted house and I had a two year old named after my cousin (I can’t have children and I would never name a child after my cousin). He became very sick and only wanted to play with the dog. He cried and cried after getting stuck in the dog kennel until I asked him if he wanted to sleep in mommy’s bed. He stopped crying and fell right to sleep and dissappeared.
so this morning i had a dream that my family and i went to like a fair and there was a section for the kids , for some reason i went there and one of the kids didn’t have family and he was constantly crying , skinny too . so i decided to take him in . but then , i was walking home and i saw this little girl in the middle of the street , she was disabled and nobody had stopped to help her , so when the cars were clear , i went in and helped her walk to the sidewalk and took her in as well . i was so frustrated because nobody helped them .
Hi Vallary – what a beautiful dream! Dreams can be interpretated from an “outer angle” or from an “inner angle” (or both at the same time). In an outer angle the dream might portray how you have helped/nourished somebody/something (a project) in real life lately (or how you maybe wished you had?!). From the inner angle the dream might portray how you are currently taking care of / nourishing important sides of yourself, symbolized by those kids. Best – Michael
My friend died in 2015.It hurt me and I failed to cry. Everytime someone dies, it reminds me of him. Please note that he and I never dated. However, two nights ago I had a dream that he and I had a baby whom I was fighting to get custody of. What could this mean? Please help me interpret it
Hi Bwalya, and thank you for your comment, and highly interesting dream! You might ask yourself; how do you see your friend, what kind of type was he? Maybe he had a trait that you are currently also developing symbolized by the baby in the dream. Or – maybe the relationship you had back then birthed something in you that are now “coming alive”. Interesting of course is that, that you are fighting for custody – what, in your life right now, either in your inner life, or in your outer life, are you fighting to own/claim ownership of? Best regards – Michael
I am an 18 year old girl, and I had a dream that I had e newborn baby. It was never said aloud in the dream but I knew when I held that baby. That was a couple of weeks ago. All day yesterday and today, I feel upset and almost depressed because I feel like I miss my baby from my dream. I feel like I want him even though he doesn’t exist.
Hi Meera – wow, what an interesting dream! And what a loss it is to not have that baby! As suggested in the blogpost above, you might ask yourself; what might this baby symbolize; a wish that I have about something, an inner gift (strenght of yours) you might have, but are currently not using? It might of course also be about the actual wish of becoming a mother. Or something else. Dream interpretation requires a bit of effort to link the dream to the real life situation, and I don’t know what is happening in your life 🙂 Best – Michael

Hi Michael,
Great article.
I don’t usually dream of children. But the night before i had a dream in which a man like visited me with his just born child, the child was wrapped in white, a little like mummy clothing. This man told me his wife is no more.
Yesterday I dreamt of two women giving birth, not of the process but I saw just born babies. The setting was jovial mostly, except that one of them was separated from her child.
A couple of things – I am not pregnant. This man is not married, never has been.
If you could shed some light on this, it would be great.
Thank you.

In my dream I saw my daughter at 2 different ages, if say around 3 and 5, and the two images of her at the Dr ages were talking and walking together, in a hallway. I saw them (her) And in my dream I thought, how cool that 3 year old Brooke and 5 year old Brooke can hang out together…. I have never had a dream like this before or heard of anyone having a dream like this…
I had a dream i was going on vacation & waiting on my friend to arrive at airport but I kept being distracted by cute little toddlers. I ended up losing pieces of my luggage & almost missing my flight bc I never checked my luggage in. My dream jumped to reaching our destination but it was a different destination & right as I was walking to check-in another cute toddler blocked my path & reached for me & I woke up. It was strange & I don’t understand it.
I keep having dreams where it’s either my ex or the guy I’m dating, and then they have a child with them. It’s theirs and it’s like a situation where they are asking for a relationship and asking if having the child and sharing responsibility is okay. And every time I end up super excited and playing with her (always a girl). I’ve been having these dreams for about a week now and don’t know what to think of them…not to mention, the ex that is sometimes in them is an ex from over a year ago and I’ve had a boyfriend since then.
