Dreams about feces – what do they mean? (Dream interpretation feces and excrements)

Dreams about feces / urine / toilets

Some are surprised about dreaming that they make stools/feces. It is actually a very common dream theme. A feces dream is often about how we dispose (or do not dispose!) something psychological, in this case thoughts or memories that really has been a load of “shit” (that is burdensome) to carry around. To pee in dreams often carries the same meaning. There are however several angles to what it means to defecate / urinate in dreams. These are reviewed below.

Emptying bowels as a symbol of getting rid of negative thougths. Feces (shit) in dreams can be a symbol of getting rid of something that has been a burden to us psychologically. A man dreamt that he sat and talked with a therapist whilst he was shitting ​​in very large quantities. It was hugely embarrassing for him to sit there and empty his bowels while the therapist was looking at it. Shortly before this dream, he had in reality just relieved his emotions to a therapist. This is a very traditional illustration of how defecating in dreams can be understood as getting rid of something that has cost us a lot of (negative) energy psychologically.

For some time the man had gone around with a lot of thoughts as to whether he should leave his wife or not. He thought it was a hugely embarrassing dream – and the key here is that it was very much out of the comfort zone and truly embarrassing for him to finally tell about his many thoughts to someone else. In his dream this embarrassment was depicted as how highly embarrassing it is to sit in front of someone and empty your bowels.

Many times we “take a dump” (or pee) in dreams while we sit at the lavatory. The location of the lavatory can provide a hint as to whether it is at work, at home or in a third place that we need to get rid of our shit, or simply what the source of our negative emotions is.

When trying to understand your dreams it is important to know that your dreams are… your dreams. As such, you are the best person to figure out the true meaning of your dreams.

However, it is important to learn how to generally approach your dreams. Dream dictionaries like this one are only a supplement, and if you want to fully utilize the potential of your dreams, you should start at a different place.

To wipe off your feces on someone else – as an expression.
We can also dream that we sit and smother our feces on someone else – in the sense that we “wipe off our shit” on the other person – an expression which is also used in everyday language.

Psychologically speaking, we are often projecting our own concerns, or perhaps unfortunate (unacknowledged) sides of ourselves onto others – i.e. we attach some negative (or positive!) characteristics to another person that this person does not have in reality. On the contrary, it is our selves that have them , but we do not want to acknowledge that.

Instead we walk around and fret about how arrogant and annoying other people are – but in reality, it is ourselves that we should be irritated about. A dream where you smother your feces on someone else could tell you that this is something you do; attach your less attractive (and unconscious) properties onto other people.

Flooded toilets in dreams can similarly be an illustration of how we are about to explode from being filled with negative thoughts (/negative mental energy), and that we have a hard time getting rid of these thoughts.

Dream dictionaries are a very helpful tool when interpreting dreams. However, generally learning how to approach your dreams, will give you a better foundation for understanding them.
