Dream interpretation on adultery/infidelity

Dreams about infidelity

Dreams of infidelity

To dream of infidelity – what does it mean?

Dream interpretation on adultery/infidelity.

It is not a pleasant experience in reality/waking life and neither is it in dreams. But before proceeding to attacking and accusing your boyfriend/girlfriend, or believing that you secretly want to cheat on your partner if you dreamt that you were doing it, then read on. It’s probably about something else.

Dreams about a cheating boyfriend/girlfriend as an image of instability/uncertainty in the relationship.

“I dreamt that my boyfriend (/girlfriend) cheated on me!” A dream that many have had. It could of course also be the other way round “I dreamt that I was cheating on my boyfriend (/girlfriend)!” When you dream of infidelity in this way, it can be experienced as something very scary and uncomfortable, but before we get much further here, I hasten to say that it most likely is not about what you think it’s about.

When we dream that our partner is unfaithful, it’s frequently a (perhaps unconscious) feeling in ourselves that our relationship with our partner may be experienced as less safe and secure during the time that we have this dream. Our partner may in the waking life be “unfaithful” in ways other than with another man/woman.

For example with his/her work, children, friends, interests or so. It could also just be that our partner does not show us as much interest as he/she used to. In the end, this angle on infidelity dreams is about a fear of actually being exposed to adultery or abandonment.

This is also why we can wake up in the morning and be furious with our boyfriend/girlfriend (husband/wife) after he/she has been unfaithful to us in a dream. We are unconsciously angry and afraid because we feel, or fear, that something in the relationship is not quite as it should (ideally) be.

When you dream that your partner is cheating on you, it can also be a reflection of how your relationship has become stagnant, or you might have quarreled a lot lately. In other words, infidelity dreams rarely reflect real infidelity. Instead you must look for areas in your life and/or relationship where you feel let down.

If in real life there is an indication that your partner is in fact cheating on you – and you also dreamt that he/she is, then stick to real facts, i.e. what you’ve actually experienced or sensed in your waking life – and keep the dream out of the equation if you take it up with him/her (afterall, it is a dream).

If you have a history of infidelity in past relationships (or even current), then research shows that you might be more prone to having infidelity dreams, i.e. again, you are very likely not a victim of real adultery, but more a victim of your own innate fear of being let down/left.

In extension to this it is becoming apparent to me that a common theme with many who dream of their partners being unfaithful to them, is that they simply feel inferior to their partner – and that of course is something they should work on changing, i.e. building their self confidence and feeling of self worth. Be aware; if this applies to you, then the feeling of inferiority is totally about yourself and your feelings of inferiority. As such it is not about your partner.

When trying to understand your dreams it is important to know that your dreams are… your dreams. As such, you are the best person to figure out the true meaning of your dreams.

However, it is important to learn how to generally approach your dreams. Dream dictionaries like this one are only a supplement, and if you want to fully utilize the potential of your dreams, you should start at a different place.

My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” gives you a great foundation for understanding (and recalling) your dreams.

Adultery in a dream as an image of internal neglected sides of ourselves.

If you dream that you are cheating on your boyfriend/girlfriend, it can also be a picture that you somehow overlook yourself in the relationship, or more specifically: parts of yourself . For example, if you dream that you have sex with your ex, you should seldomly be afraid of secretly wanting to go back to him or her.

Instead, you must ask yourself what you associate with him or her. What does he/she represent for you? Is it something your current partner can not give you? Or is it that your ex possessed a side (e.g. being creative or impulsive) that you also have, that now needs to be lived out in your waking conscious life?

The fact that you in your dreams have sex with such parts/sides of yourself is typically an illustration of you having a strong connection to the qualities represented by the one you have sex with (or that you should have it). Therefore, when a side of yourself is cheating with another side of you, then it may be an image that you overlook important forces within yourself.

Finally, it can of course also be a picture that you are “unfaithful” towards your partner, i.e. that you currently overlook your partner a bit. That you do not show him/her enough attention, perhaps because you’re very excited about your job, your kids, various projects, etc.

Dream dictionaries are a very helpful tool when interpreting dreams. However, generally learning how to approach your dreams, will give you a better foundation for understanding them. My online course “Unlock your DREAMlife” teaches you how to much better utilize – recall and understand – your dreams.

NOTE: Dreams are 100% individual, and when you dream about infidelity, it’s almost certainly about something else for you than it is for your friend, who also dreamt about infidelity. Dream interpretation / dream analysis is sometimes a difficult art, and a particular interpretation of a dream is only correct if you feel “affected” by it. Therefore, it is not certain that the above mentioned interpretations are relevant to you.
